Spring Update from the Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Center

As spring buds begin to bloom, we are delighted to share the latest updates and developments from the Picotte Center. From exciting progress on our renovation project to partnership updates and initiatives, there is much to celebrate as we continue to honor Dr. Susan Picotte's legacy and pioneering spirit.

Final Restoration Phase in Progress

The Picotte Center's final construction phase has just begun, which includes renovating all interior spaces. Supported by grants and generous donations totaling $2.5 million, this endeavor represents a blend of historic preservation and modern functionality. Exterior enhancements, including parking and landscaping, are also in progress.

With the interior restoration expected to conclude in late 2024, the Picotte Center will emerge as a multifunctional space meeting the diverse needs of Walthill and the Omaha Nation. It will include medical facilities, artist studios, a captivating museum dedicated to Dr. Susan Picotte, engaging youth spaces, and areas for start-up businesses. The Picotte Center will be a dynamic nexus of creativity, innovation, and cultural heritage.

Board Member Updates

The Picotte Center owes much of its success to the dedication and leadership of its esteemed board members, who tirelessly devote their time and expertise to guide the organization toward its goals.

We’d like to recognize and thank Godon Picotte, a descendant of Dr. Susan, Owen Porter, and Nate Merrick, who recently completed their board member terms. Their contributions have made a lasting impact on the Picotte Center and we’re truly grateful for the time they’ve dedicated as board members. 

We’d also like to welcome our newest board members, Tyler Dumas (Left), a great-great grandson of Dr. Susan, Maurice Blackbird (Center), and David Boyer (Right). 

Their diverse perspectives and expertise will enrich our efforts as we strive to create a lasting impact within our community. We are grateful to have them on board and look forward to the positive influence they will have moving forward.

Native Artist Collective

Under the leadership of Vida Stabler, the Picotte Center is in the process of establishing a Native artist collective within its walls. Recognizing the immense talent and cultural significance of Omaha Native artists, this initiative exists to provide a supportive and empowering environment for Native creatives to thrive. 

The collective aims to elevate the visibility and impact of Native art while preserving and celebrating its rich heritage. 

Interior Art Installations

As an integral aspect of the Picotte Center's interior restoration, a team of skilled artists has been diligently creating captivating art displays set to become permanent fixtures within the interior design. 

Among these talented individuals are Anthony Parker, Eddie Incina, Marla Spears, and Travis Blackbird. Their collective efforts will give rise to a diverse array of artistic expressions, including murals, depictions of Dr. Susan's life, and ledger art. 

These artworks not only pay homage to the center's historical significance but also imbue the space with a sense of cultural vibrancy and narrative richness, inviting visitors to engage with the legacy of Dr. Susan Picotte and the enduring spirit of Native heritage.

In this newsletter, we’d like to spotlight Liz Lovejoy Brown, the new executive director of the Picotte Center! With a passion for community engagement and a commitment to preserving cultural heritage, Liz brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to her role.

We recently had the opportunity to ask Liz a few questions to get to know her better and gain insight into her leadership approach. 

• What inspired you to join the Picotte Center team as the new director?

  My inspiration has been with me since I was a little girl. I’ve known the strength and perseverance Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte has carried with her since I was a child. Her willingness to push for the betterment of our people has always been my drive for as long as I can remember.

  I knew when I graduated from college, I would give back to my tribe in any capacity I could. I never imagined I would become the new director of the Picotte Center. Yes, I do have the qualifications, knowledge, and experience. To me, being in this position is very surreal. I genuinely believe that this opportunity is a calling for me. 

• Can you share a little about your background and previous experiences that led you to this role?

  Sure, I can! I am a member of the Omaha Tribe and from the Inkecabe Clan. I was born and raised in Omaha and grew up with my parents and grandpa.

  My grandpa was a well-respected elder and shared a wealth of information with me. I am thankful to have him as my grandpa. My mom was a community advocate and leader for the Native American population in Omaha, NE. My dad was dedicated to being the provider and teaching me the culture, tradition, and spirituality.

  In my career, I have worked for 17 years in the Native American community and gained so much knowledge from nonprofits to understanding financial lingo.

• What are you most excited about in your new position?

  I am most excited to see the Picotte Center grow, become a legacy, and provide the positive intentions that Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte wanted.

• Lastly, what are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work? We'd love to get to know you beyond your role as director!

  I am a mother, and I enjoy showing my children the way of life and guiding them. I do like to draw, write, sew, and bead. I love to run ( I am getting back into running). I also have a love for houseplants. I enjoy creating a community to educate others about our rich history.

Joslyn Castle Collaboration

Joslyn Castle recently hosted their first This Old Castle excursion with a behind the scenes tour of the Picotte Center. Joslyn Castle partners Preserve Omaha & History Nebraska, along with 50 preservation lovers, made the trip for a chance to see progress on the restoration of Dr. Susan’s hospital, built in 1913.

Picotte board members Nancy Gillis and Gary Bowen led the tour, sharing Dr. Susan’s story and updating guests on the restoration progress and vision.

Joslyn Castle has also expressed interest in restoring their Carriage House and featuring a display honoring Dr. Susan Picotte's legacy. Collaborating with Joslyn Castle presents an exciting opportunity to showcase Dr. Susan's remarkable life within their historic setting, fostering a deeper appreciation for her contributions to our community.

This partnership signifies more than just a commitment to historical preservation; it embodies the enduring connection between the Sarah Joslyn and Susan Picotte families. By joining forces, we celebrate the legacies of these pioneering women and their lasting impact. As we collaborate on the display honoring Dr. Susan, we are grateful for the chance to nurture this longstanding relationship and forge new connections that enrich our shared heritage.

5th USDA Grant

The Picotte Center is excited to announce that we have submitted our application for the 2024 USDA Rural Development grant, marking our fifth consecutive application to this esteemed program. 

This grant holds tremendous potential to further our mission of revitalizing the Picotte Center and enhancing its capacity to serve as a vibrant hub of community engagement, cultural preservation, and economic development.

If awarded, the funds from this grant will be allocated towards critical aspects of our interior restoration project, as well as the acquisition of furniture and equipment essential for the center's operations.
