Summer Update – Celebrating Heritage, Community, and Growth at The Picotte Center

Summer is in full swing, and so is progress at the Susan La Flesche Picotte Center. We’re making efforts to preserve heritage, strengthen community connections, and foster growth as we move forward with the completion of the Picotte Center.

From notable developments in our exhibit spaces to opportunities for local businesses and artists, we continue to expand and enrich the cultural fabric of our community. We are continually humbled to be part of honoring Dr. Picotte's legacy and deeply grateful for supporters like you.

Site Development Update

Thanks to funding from our USDA grant, significant progress is being made in the Picotte Center's site development.

The first phase, which includes the parking lot and immediate surroundings of the center itself, is well underway. This initial work sets the foundation for an engaging and educational environment and integrates plantings used in Native medicine.

Looking ahead, we are actively raising funds for the second phase of site development. This next phase will enhance the space with walking trails, the outdoor classroom, and the drum circle, as well as introducing interactive displays. Your support will help us create a welcoming and culturally enriching outdoor experience for our community.

Exhibit Progress Report

As progress at the Picotte Center unfolds, we’re continuing to work with the 106 Group Exhibit Designers on a detailed museum exhibit dedicated to Dr. Susan's life and practice. Set to be installed late this year, the display will offer an in-depth look into her remarkable contributions and legacy. Once construction is complete, we will move forward with the installation of these carefully curated exhibits.

In addition to the Dr. Susan exhibit, we are thrilled to unveil an extraordinary album that captures a pivotal period in history when Dr. Susan and her sister, Susette, were making their mark. This remarkable collection is filled with little-known stories and offers a unique and intimate glimpse into their incredible journey. The album originally belonged to Susette La Flesche and has been generously provided by Mig and Carolyn, descendants of Susette.

This rendering shows plans for the first-floor entrance, which will welcome visitors, introduce Dr. Picotte, and communicate the main exhibit message with an Umóⁿhoⁿ central context.

Joslyn Castle Collaboration

Joslyn Castle and the Picotte Center continue to work together, fostering a strong and collaborative relationship that benefits our community.

Recently, Joslyn Castle hosted an art exhibit featuring native artists Sarah Rowe and Susette “Bright Eyes” La Flesche, Dr. Picotte’s sister. Susette’s painting, pictured on the left, was displayed at the exhibit and is part of a larger collection generously donated to the Picotte Center.

Our collaboration with Joslyn Castle continues to enrich our community by celebrating and preserving the artistic and historical contributions of Meg and Carolyn Johnson.

Community Meeting/Reading Room

We are excited to update you on the multi-use Community Meeting/Reading Room at the Picotte Center.

This versatile space will feature interlocking tables that can be configured as large boardroom tables or separated for classroom-style seating, making it perfect for various activities and meetings. The room will be equipped with a flat-screen TV and house a collection of artifacts, along with bookcases stocked with reading materials for research and study.

Whether you're looking to delve into research, work on school assignments after classes, or hold a meeting, the Community Meeting/Reading Room is designed to meet your needs.

Picotte Center Gift Shop

The Picotte Center's gift shop will be an inviting space where you can explore and purchase various items. We plan to offer books related to the Omaha tribe, unique artwork from local artists, and an array of artisan crafts. You can also grab a fresh cup of coffee while you browse.

Our gift shop will be a place to find meaningful gifts and support local creativity.
